<scp> <i>Toxoplasma gondii</i> </scp> infection and the risk of adult glioma in two prospective studies

Toxoplasma gondii (T gondii) is a common parasite that shows affinity to neural tissue and may lead the formation of cysts in brain. Previous epidemiologic studies have suggested an association between glioma increased prevalence T infection, but prospective are lacking. Therefore, we examined prediagnostic antibodies risk two cohorts using nested case-control study design. Cases matched controls were selected from American Cancer Society's Prevention Study-II Nutrition Cohort (CPSII-NC) (n = 37 cases 74 controls) Norwegian Registry's Janus Serum Bank (Janus) 323 controls). Blood samples collected prior diagnosis analyzed for surface antigens (p22 sag-1), with individuals considered seropositive if either antigen detected. Conditional logistic regression was used calculate odds ratios (OR) 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) each cohort. In both cohorts, suggestive increase observed among those infected (OR: 2.70; CI: 0.96-7.62 CPSII-NC; OR: 1.32, 0.85-2.07 Janus), particularly participants high antibody titers specific sag-1 (CPSII-NC 3.35, 0.99-11.38; 1.79, 1.02-3.14).
